A Monumental Journey: The Renaissance Mural of OST South Union
The OST South Union neighborhood in Houston, Texas, is home to a historic mural that represents a powerful convergence of art, community, and cultural revival. This monumental project, a collaboration between Williamsburg Enterprises, Solel International, and the OST South Union Civic Club, began on June 22, 2020, marking the start of an ambitious vision to transform the area. Today, the mural stands as a testament to resilience, collaboration, and the enduring spirit of community leaders and artists.
The Beginning of a Vision
The journey began on June 15, 2020, when Williamsburg Enterprises and Solel International entered into an agreement to bring this transformative project to life. By June 22, work officially commenced at 6102 Scott Street. This marked not only the start of painting but also the beginning of a broader effort to celebrate local heroes and inspire future generations. The project culminated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony on October 22, 2020—a historic moment that brought together residents and stakeholders to witness the unveiling of a mural that now serves as a beacon for the community.
Honoring Local Champions
The mural captures the essence of community leadership by honoring individuals who have made significant contributions to OST South Union:
Swatara and Tawali Olushula: Advocates for better food options and sustainable nourishment in the community.
Mr. Terry Garner: Steward of the Palm Center Community Garden, fostering growth both literally and figuratively.
Hassani Sallah: A key figure at the Sehah Youth & Fitness Center providing vital support to local residents.
Kavanagh Nweze: Dedicated to business education and raising consciousness in OST South Union.
These honorees symbolize the collective effort to uplift their neighborhood through education, sustainability, and social support.
The Artists Behind the Masterpiece
Moorish-American Artist, Danny Asberry El led a team of talented artists who brought this vision to life:
Julian “Genesis” Beasley: Incredible artist and native of OST South Union who found deep personal meaning in contributing to his childhood neighborhood.
David Romo: A brain injury survivor whose resilience shines through his creative contributions.
Michael FG: An artist who emphasizes global unity by connecting his Cuban heritage with African American culture.
Their collaborative efforts transformed the mural into not just an artwork but a living narrative of hope and progress.
Williamsburg Enterprises: A Key Partner
Williamsburg Enterprises played an essential role in making this project possible. As a key collaborator alongside Solel International and the OST South Union Civic Club, Williamsburg Enterprises provided critical support that enabled the project’s success. Their commitment to revitalizing urban spaces and fostering community engagement was instrumental in bringing this vision to fruition. Matt Kelley was one of the point people with Williamsburg that helped communicate information regarding the progress.
A Legacy Rooted in Leadership
This project was supported by the OST South Union Civic Club under the leadership of Gwendolyn Fedrick, whose influence remains deeply felt despite her passing due to COVID-19. A meeting in OST/South Union on August 3, 2020, at 5:30 p.m. allowed the community to voice ideas about potential tenants and resources for the old HEB site. Gwendolyn’s vision for community empowerment continues to resonate through this initiative.
A Historic Milestone for Art and Technology
The mural is more than just paint on walls—it incorporates augmented reality features that allow viewers to interact with its story through video elements. This innovative approach makes it one of Houston's first large-scale murals to combine art with technology. It reflects Solel International's mission to push boundaries while honoring cultural heritage.
A Lasting Impact
Since its completion, the Renaissance mural has become a symbol of unity and resilience for OST South Union. It highlights how art can serve as both a mirror reflecting community values and a catalyst for change. By celebrating local leaders and fostering creativity, this project has left an indelible mark on Houston’s cultural landscape.
As we look back on this journey that began in 2020, it is clear that the Renaissance mural is not just a work of art—it is a historical landmark that will inspire future generations to dream big and work together for a brighter future.
